My daughter is doing an essay on Horslips in her Leaving cert on wednesday if a certain topic comes up. Anyway, that persuaded me to get up into the attic yesterday, push aside the six years worth of NME`s (1977-83, any offers??!!), and take down the vinyl albums to giver her a flavour etc etc. In the midst of the albums was the subject of this topic with our heroes on the cover, for those with photographic memories the headline is "WHERE HAVE THEY GONE-THOSE FIERCE MOUSTACHIOD MEN?" with the group photo from the inner gatefold of the Táin with another contemporay group photo below it.
This laughable excerpt from Bill Grahams rambling review/!interview caught my eye " AND THEIR CONFIDENCE INCREASES WITH THE RESPONSE AS THEY MOVE INTO "MAD HATTER" WHICH FEATURES DELICATE INTERPLAY AND SOLOS FROM JOHNNY EGAN AND CHARLES O CONNOR"

maybe one of the lads could tell us what hallucinogen Bill was on that night!

Here are some nostalgic out takes from the magazine.

ads for Sloopys, Mcgonagles, Zhivago Records Galway

Supersonic Sounds, Gaiety Green, Dublin 2 offering Aliens for 3.35p (r.r.p. 3.85p!)

The Alchemists Head East Essex St, Irelands only science fiction, fantasy and occult book shop!

A major interview with Frank Farley of the Pirates (never heard of him/them!)

Karl Tsigdinos doing the singles reviews, including "saints and sinners" by Johnny and the Self Abusers, the future Simple MInds

Contributers included Liam Mackey, Neil Jordan, and Julian Vignoles.

Top of the irish singles chart was Mull of Kyntyre, top of the Albums was Disco Fever by Various Artists, Aliens was a new entry at no. 15!, one ahead of the Bothy Band and two ahead of Gina and the Champions (aargh!), at no. 18 was Never Mind the Bollocks

seems like a good line to finish on

The Pirates are a legendary rock'n roll band .The original band were a 50's skiffle group. At one stage in the 60s when they were fronted by Johnney Kidd they were supported on tour by a band that later made a small impact on music...the Beatles!
Their last hit to my knowledge was the supurb "All in this together"....if you don't know it look it up on spotify or Grooveshark. It is under 3 minutes long and must be played LOUD!

More info on the band at.....

Didn't The Pirates do the original version of "Shakin' All Over"?

God forgive my cynicism, but this was 1970`s Ireland, i assumed it was some Irish showband band wagon jumpers!! Given the size of the article and the fact it was in Hot Press i should have known better!

RicochetMan, if you send me your e-mail address, I have a copy of an essay from Jim Nelis for you. He e-mailed me this morning.

Jim would rather not share it Cal, so I must respect his wishes.

No offence intended but why share it with yourself, RicochetMan and his daughter then???????? Especially if his daughter then uses it for her leaving cert.!

This has obviously made the rest of us jealous.....maybe should have kept it to yourselves and not let us know about it !

My aged uncle used to recite that poem when I was a lad Tatoo. I then lived in Kathmandu for a year in 2007/08

Not very interesting really, I'm just trying to reach post #100. Then do I get a red star?

Certainly a Horslips themed front HP cover. Horslips then and now. When now was 77! Ta, Ric + Premier.

Also Jack Bruce and Eric Bell on the cover. Lots of Lizzy connections for Bell and I understand Johnny was influenced by Bruce's vocals esp for the high notes when he sang Ghosts.

Good one on the pirates connections Gearoid/Taff.

BTW Taff I'd guess the essay gesture was well intentioned. Let's all play that way.

Are Horslips big in Kathmandu, Hugh ?

Just reply to this and you'll get a red star (or is it at 101), unless of course you've p!ssed of our esteemed admin. in which case it could be pink.

It says we are not worthy, or it says Broke Back Mountain is your favourite movie, or Fairies Wear Boots was your favourite Black Sabbath song, or a whole lot more!

Jim had my e-mail address but had no way of contacting Terry (Ricochetman) as his e-mail and PM were not enabled. I don't know if the essay actually came up in the Leaving Cert but in any case his daughter was only going to use it as reference.
